Who We Are

Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County works with qualified, deserving families to help them realize the dream of owning their own home.

Our Vision

A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Our Mission

Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

We build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable housing.

Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County provides affordable homeownership opportunities for low-to-moderate income families and individuals in Gaston County.  Since 1989, Habitat Gaston has built more than 120 homes, providing over 400 children and adults with safe, secure and healthy homes.

History

Founded in 1988, Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County (Habitat Gaston) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit and an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a widely respected global brand.  We seek to eliminate poverty housing and to advocate for affordable housing as a matter of conscience and action. Habitat Gaston builds simple, decent housing with help from volunteer labor, the “sweat equity” of our partner families, and community investment of money and materials.

Habitat Gaston continues to build a strong and sustainable organization while building affordable homes throughout Gaston County.  The organization is well-positioned to build on the success of its first 30 years and is crafting an exciting and powerful vision for the future in order to leverage its expertise to add impact in the areas of neighborhood revitalization and critical home repairs.

Core Themes

Strength

A Habitat home is a strong foundation for a family, an opportunity on which they can build a better life. Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities.

Stability

A Habitat home is a stabilizing force for a family. Better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development and the ability — and financial flexibility — to make forward-looking choices.

Self-Reliance

Through shelter, we empower.  A decent place to live and an affordable mortgage help homeowners save more, invest in education, pursue opportunity and have more financial stability.

Anti-Discrimination Policy

Habitat Gaston welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds, and we serve people in need of affordable housing regardless of race, religion, age, gender, or political views. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will offer assistance based on program qualifications, not adherence or conversion to a particular faith or require persons to respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith. Our motivation is to unite people around the concept of “putting God’s love into action” along with persons from all faiths or with no faith convictions, who are interested in helping those in need of safe, decent affordable housing.

Our Values

Inclusiveness

We believe that all families deserve a decent, affordable home, that all families provide a meaningful voice in this process, and that we don’t discriminate in selecting our partner families or where we deliver our products and services.

Homeownership is Transformative

We believe that partnering with families who want to achieve the dream of homeownership is transformative – both for the family and for Habitat Gaston, our volunteers, our donors, our community partners. We believe that homeownership of a healthy, safe, and affordable home improves the quality of life for the entire community and county.

Collaboration

We believe that building community is a holistic process in providing safe and healthy communities. We strive to form strong, productive partnerships so that the voices and participation of residents, government, education, police, fire, nonprofits, community leaders, churches, and others are included and valued as we work toward a common goal of providing affordable housing.

Volunteerism

We believe that volunteerism is an important component of our mission to build homes, community, and hope and that they embody the “heart, hands, and voices” for providing affordable housing.

Advocacy

We believe that being a public advocate for the need and transformative results of decent, affordable housing is vital to our success and important to building a healthy community that improves the quality of life for residents.

Excellence in Operations

We are committed to achieving our strategies and goals while operating at a high standard and with transparency, and through excellent stewardship of public trust, donor funding, volunteer support, partnerships, partner families, and the Habitat Gaston team.
